History
On May, 12 1901 fifty-six charter members established the first Knights of Columbus Council in Decatur and began a tradition of generous interest and participation in the Church and the community, Twenty-five years later, Council 577 had grown to a membership of 550. The council moved to new headquarters in 1950, and in 1951, 600 members strong, the Council celebrated its fiftieth anniversary with a diner dance. In 1970, council 577 expanded even more with the purchase of its present facility and membership soared to over 900. The Council has been given many awards for its growing membership and unselfish participation in Knights of Columbus activities. In 2009 the current facility had a complete remodel and is used by members and the general public.
Our Decatur Council has served with civic pride. Throughout these past 108 years, its members have served our country, raised countless funds to aid the handicapped and donated innumerable hours of time to aid their needy neighbors...never forgetting their roles as Catholic men in the community, in the Church and in the home.
It is with great pride that we celebrate our over a century long era of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism!
